Migrating products to the Shopify platform

You need a Shopify platform to successfully trade around the world, but you’re faced with the important issue of migrating products to the new Shopify platform from your old one.

One safe and guaranteed method of importing data into your new Shopify store is to use SCV files. By filling out the table in the right format, you’ll be able to import merchandise without difficulty.

We recommend using Google Sheets.

CSV files

CSV is a common file format where columns are separated by commas, a file format (.csv) for spreadsheets. You can use CSV files to import and export products, customers, goods, orders (export only) and discounts (export only).

This format will be useful to you in many situations, such as when you are switching to Shopify from another eCommerce platform. You will be able to prepare CSV tables and then import products and customers to the new Shopify store (to do this, you can contact the shopify development company for help).

This method with CSV files may seem intimidating at first, but once you understand the import/export principle, you’ll be able to import products without any problems.

Your CSV files must use UTF-8 encoding.

IMPORTANT: If you use a CSV file, remember to use UTF-8 encoding to avoid unwanted special characters in your file. If you save your file after you forget to confirm its UTF-8 encoding, your data will be corrupted.

I recommend using Google Sheets to work with CSV files. To use Google Sheets, you must upload your CSV file to Google Sheets. After making the changes, export the CSV file to your computer.

CSV file format

The first line of the CSV file must contain the product field headings described in the table, in the same order, each separated by a comma.

Handle

Handle is a unique name for each product. These fields can contain letters, dashes, and numbers, but no spaces or other symbols, including periods. The descriptor is used in the URL for each item. For example, the descriptor for «Women’s Snowboard» should be «Women’s Snowboard» and the product URL should be https://yourstore.myshopify.com/products/womens-snowboard.

Each line in the CSV file that starts on a new line will be like a new item.

Title

The name of your product. Example: Woman’s Blouse

Body (HTML)

A description of your product in HTML format. This can also be plain text without any formatting.

Vendor (min. 2 characters)

The name of the manufacturer/supplier of the product. For example, Samsung.

Type

Type of product. For example: Dresses

Tags (can be left blank).

A comma-separated list of tags used to label an item. Most spreadsheets automatically add quotation marks around the tags. If you are using a simple text editor, you will need to manually add the quotes. For example, «tag1, tag2, tag3″.

Indicates whether the product is published in your online store. Valid values: TRUE — product is published at your store or FALSE — product is not published at your store. If the field is left blank, the product will be published.

Option1 Name

The name of an option. If the item has an option, enter its name. For example, Color.

For products with only one option, this option must be set to Title.

If you want to import your products into a specific collection when you load the CSV file, you can add a new column anywhere in your CSV file with the title name Collection. This is the only column you can add to the CSV that does not break the format:

Adding Merchandise Images

If you’re importing items using a CSV file, the process is a little different than entering items through your store administrator account. Here’s what you need to know:

I recommend using Google Sheets to view and edit your version of the CSV files.

The images of your products should be uploaded to a publicly accessible URL. That is, they should be freely accessible and without a password. The best way to do this is to upload your images to the Shopify admin «Files» page. The URL will be generated automatically.
